Counterfeit electronic components are not a new problem, but it is a growing one. As authorised supply chains tighten (and the geo-political headwinds add to the complexity), some procurement teams may be pushed towards independent broker channels, channels which, historically, come with a riskier profile than authorised distributors. The consequences of counterfeiting for aerospace and defence buyers go well beyond supplier disputes. So, in this piece, we’ll examine what procurement teams in aerospace and defence need to know.
The primary entry point for counterfeit electronic components is the broker and the grey market. Risk can concentrate here, especially when buyers are under pressure to find parts and find them fast. Parts may have been re-marked or relabelled, and downgraded components can be passed off as a higher specification.
Components can also be recycled and passed off as new. For instance, some operators may look to harvest old components from end-of-life (EOL) boards and pass them off as a new product. Cloned parts are another way components can enter the market; ostensibly, the buyer is purchasing an original, but it will have been manufactured to a much lower standard. Fundamentally, however, these risks can be mitigated by strong qualification processes and rigorous supplier vetting.
Aerospace and defence OEM’s manufacture products that are designed to last decades. The components within them, however, don’t. This, in turn, leads to some components no longer being available in the authorised supply chain and leaving procurement managers to fulfil their requirements through higher-risk channels.
Safety-critical applications mean a counterfeit product that passes an initial inspection can cause serious consequences in the real world. And, when it comes to aviation or defence, the consequences can be serious. The documentation requirements under AS6081 , JOSCAR and UK Defence Standard frameworks mean liability exposure is significant if solid and rigorous due diligence processes cannot be demonstrated.
Detecting a counterfeit component is not straightforward, and no single test is definitive. A credible distributor will apply a layered inspection process covering visual inspection and physical measurements, X-ray analysis of internal structure, decapsulation to inspect the die directly, solderability testing, and electrical testing against manufacturer specifications. Not every distributor carries out all of these, so ask specifically which methods they apply, whether testing is in-house or outsourced, and request documented results.
When evaluating a distributor’s anti-counterfeit credentials, accreditation is the starting point but it needs to be verifiable. AS6081 sets out specific requirements for detecting and avoiding fraudulent components, covering supplier qualification, inspection, and traceability. A distributor holding this certification should be able to demonstrate exactly how they meet those requirements in practice, not just present a certificate. Similarly, IDEA membership and IDEA-QSM 9090compliance indicates that a distributor’s quality management processes have been assessed against an industry-recognised standard for independent component distribution.
Beyond certification, look for in-house inspection capability rather than sole reliance on third-party testing, a published counterfeit policy that sets out the distributor’s commitments in writing, and a willingness to provide full traceability documentation without needing to be asked. On accreditation generally, always verify against the relevant third-party register rather than taking a distributor’s own website at face value, a logo is not the same as a current, audited certification.
What does the supplier’s traceability documentation look like? If it’s vague or not central to their proposition this is cause for concern. Similarly a lack of inspection documentation or an opaque processes framework is definitely a red flag. Too good to be true prices, high pressure sales tactics and accreditation claims that can’t be verified should tell you all you need to know.
Counterfeit risk does not disappear when you choose a reputable-sounding distributor. It reduces when you choose one that can demonstrate, in documented and verifiable terms, exactly how they identify, reject, and report suspect components.
